The Doodle Boom in Charleston

If you live in Charleston, you've noticed — doodles are everywhere. Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Bernedoodles, Aussiedoodles... these adorable mixed breeds have taken over the Lowcountry. And while their curly, low-shedding coats are a big part of their appeal, they also require regular, specialized grooming.

Understanding Your Doodle's Coat

Doodle coats generally fall into three categories:

Straight/Flat Coat

Most similar to the retriever parent. Lower maintenance but sheds more. Needs regular brushing and bathing.

Wavy/Fleece Coat

The most common doodle coat. Soft and wavy, low-shedding, but prone to matting if not maintained. This coat type needs professional grooming every 6-8 weeks.

Curly/Wool Coat

Most similar to the poodle parent. Very low shedding but highest maintenance. Mats easily and needs professional grooming every 4-6 weeks.

How Often Should You Groom Your Doodle?

Professional grooming: Every 4-8 weeks depending on coat type and the length you prefer.

At-home brushing: 3-4 times per week minimum. Daily is ideal, especially for curly coats.

Bathing: Only between grooms if your doodle gets dirty. Over-bathing can dry out their skin.

Common Doodle Grooming Mistakes

1. Not brushing enough between grooms

This is the #1 mistake doodle owners make. Those beautiful curls mat easily, and mats can cause pain, skin irritation, and even infections. Brush all the way down to the skin, not just the surface.

2. Waiting too long between grooms

If a doodle goes too long without grooming, the coat can become so matted that shaving is the only option. Regular grooming prevents this.

3. Not introducing grooming early

Start grooming your doodle puppy early! Our Puppy's First Groom package is designed to make the first experience positive and set the foundation for a lifetime of stress-free grooming.

Popular Doodle Styles

- Teddy Bear Cut: 1-2 inches all over with a rounded face. The classic doodle look.

- Puppy Cut: Even length all over, usually 1/2 to 1 inch. Low maintenance.

- Lamb Cut: Short body with fluffy legs. Great for summer.

- Kennel Cut: Short all over. Easiest to maintain in Charleston's humidity.

Charleston's Humidity and Your Doodle

Our humid subtropical climate means doodle coats tend to hold moisture, which can lead to matting and skin issues. We recommend:

- More frequent grooming in summer months

- A shorter cut during the hottest months

- Thorough drying after swimming or rain

- Regular ear cleaning (moisture + floppy ears = ear infections)
